The Public Information Coordinator is responsible for engaging in public communications; overseeing digital engagement, and printed publications. The Public Information Coordinator serves as a Baytown Police Department spokesperson.The position requires someone who can create long-term relationships and interact with the media, citizens, other governmental entities and employees in a collaborative manner. In addition, this position is responsible for working with the Citys Emergency Management Team in the execution of effective emergency outreach communications.Attendance is an essential function of this position. The City reserves the right to require an employee in this position to work more than 40 hours a week which may be outside of regular work hours. This position provides services or performs duties for the benefit of the general public during emergency situations. These may include services or duties different from those performed in the usual course and scope of your job. In the event of an evacuation or crisis situation, the incumbent in this position may be required to remain to perform needed services. This position is considered to be essential.Duties+ Plans and executes the Police Departments digital communications program, to include two-way social media interaction, video updates, and web presence. Manages the Police Departments Facebook and Instagram accounts.+ Responds to media inquiries, forms relationships with the media and actively pitches narratives to all forms of media at a local and regional level. Serves as a spokesperson on police matters.+ The PIC is responsible for the flow of information from the department to the Media and the public. This is accomplished through completing a daily incident report and responding to media inquiries, completing media and news releases. Acting as a liaison between the department and media representatives in the event of crisis situations within the department.+ The PIC is responsible for coordinating with the Chief of Police or designee and media representatives in the preparations necessary for a news briefing / conference. These preparations should include, but are not limited to location selection and preparation, establishing the time of the briefing, briefing the Chief of Police or other person to speak in front of the media, and clarifying with investigative personnel and the legal advisor information to be released.+ Performs all other related duties as assigned.Minimum QualificationsREQUIRED:+ Bachelors Degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or related field from an accredited college or university or equivalent, directly related experience. + Experience in Microsoft Office Systems and social media applications.+ Valid drivers license with acceptable driving record.+ Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check and obtain CJIS clearance. PREFERRED: + Professional marketing and communication experience with minimal supervision.+ Knowledge and understanding of law enforcement operations. + Experience in crisis management.+ On-camera interviews.Additional InformationKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, and techniques involved with public information, media and community relations, employee communications, writing, editing, graphic arts, audio visual production, and photography.
