As a full-service municipal government our purpose is simple Together we enrich lives and build community.Our employees are dedicated to public service through Caring, Innovation, Collaboration, Leadership and Stewardship, and we are looking for a qualified candidate who shares our values to join our team in the role of Rescue & Volunteer Specialist.The Rescue & Volunteer Specialist will assist the Volunteer Supervisor and Outreach Supervisor in combining efforts to ensure appropriate duties are fulfilled for both the Volunteer and Outreach programs. This role coordinates duties to work with kennel technicians and all other staff that are assigned to animal care and enrichment duties when not assisting the Outreach and Volunteer Supervisors. This position ensures consistent application of disease mitigation processes through proper cleaning and sanitizing methods, humane animal care and handling, provides daily enrichment activities for animals, and assists in inventory management. Must not be allergic to animals and be able to work all assigned shifts. This position interacts with the public frequently, resolves disputes, and demonstrates complex problem-solving skills.Duties
      • Responsible for ensuring Volunteer & Outreach Supervisor needs are prioritized as directed. Assists and provides oversight of kennel technicians in solving problems and ensuring proper cleaning and sanitizing duties are performed. Assists Animal Care Specialists and notes animal behavior and illness to be reported to the Shelters medical team. Provides assistance and medical support including animal check-in, animal medical history documentation, software database input and taking photos and videos of animals for social media purposes. Assists with vaccinations, microchipping animals, and provides supportive care of animals as directed by the Shelters medical team.
      • Provides customer service to citizens to show, interact and move animals to get to know rooms or play yards for companion interaction. Assists and provides oversight of kennel technicians and staff assigned to animal care and enrichment duties. Handles administrative paperwork for the animal care and enrichment team.
      • Enters relevant data into the shelter database as it relates to animal behavior and care needs. Completes daily inventory checklists. Assists Shelters medical team in cleaning and sanitizing surgical suites and maintaining proper disease mitigation protocols. Stocks all cleaning, laundry and food supplies and helps manage shelter inventory.
      • Assists with the transportation of animals to rescue groups, shelters, veterinarian hospitals and/or adopter/foster clients.
      • Performs all other related duties as assigned.Minimum QualificationsREQUIRED:
        • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
        • Two years of experience with animal care in a shelter, vet clinic, animal adoption agency, shelter volunteer, or other related field.
        • Valid TX drivers license with acceptable driving record;
        • TX State Certification in Euthanasia or able to obtain within 1 year. PREFERRED:
          • Current animal shelter, veterinarian clinic, volunteer or animal rescue work as related. Additional InformationAttendance is an essential function of this position. The City reserves the right to require an employee in this position to work overtime. This position provides services or performs duties for the benefit of the general public during emergency situations. These may include services or duties different from those performed in the usual course and scope of your job. In the event of an evacuation, the incumbent in this position may be required to remain to perform needed services.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESKnowledge of best practices in no-kill animal sheltering. Ability to exercise good public relations skills. Knowledge of animal diseases. Knowledge of domestic animal behaviors and humane capture techniques. Ability to handle animals without harm to them, others, or self. Ability to properly prepare lab specimens. Knowledge and practice of working in a vet clinic and/or assistance with veterinarian practices to include general vaccinations, basic medical care and assisting a Vet Technician and Veterinarian. Ability to use proper euthanasia techniques. Ability to get along appropriately with co-workers and the public. Knowledge of planning, management, and organizational skills. Ability to supervise and monitor animal services operations. Ability to supervise other shelter operations in the absence of the other Animal Services Supervisors and Animal Services Manager.
